Podemos and Alianza Verde denounce "the regression of environmental policies"

Madrid, June 9 (EFE).- Leaders of Podemos and Alianza Verde, along with environmental activists, denounced this Monday in the Congress of Deputies "the regression of environmental policies, the rise of climate denialism, and the lack of protection of territories against corporate interests and the government's inaction."

At a conference organized by these political parties under the title "Environment and Defense of Territory," Podemos Secretary General Ione Belarra said: "We are facing the same global struggle against a wave of reaction that is trying to undermine rights and territories through the back door."

The conference analyzed specific environmental challenges such as the deployment of mega wind and photovoltaic projects in Teruel, the lack of protection for wolves north of the Duero River, the expansion of Barcelona's El Prat airport, and the Altri macrocellulose project in Lugo. According to Belarra, "these challenges, although stemming from different realities, respond to the same generalized conflict."

The problem is also, in his opinion, of an international nature, as demonstrated by the interception by Israeli military forces of the Freedom Flotilla, a humanitarian mission bound for Gaza, which included climate activist Greta Thunberg, among others.

The coordinator of the Green Alliance, Juantxo López de Uralde, has asserted that environmentalism has become "one of the black beasts to be brought down by the far right" and has also criticized the shift by large corporations toward "denialist" positions, with companies that "continue to invest in fossil fuels despite previous environmental rhetoric: pure 'greenwashing'."

López de Uralde believes the government "benefits from such an anti-ecological environment that, by doing nothing, it presents itself as the greenest in the world" when "in reality, not only is there no progress, but achievements made in the previous term are being lost." EFE
